Daniel Arsham: Wherever You Go, There You Are

  • Orange County Museum of Art (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Daniel Arsham’s solo exhibition Wherever You Go, There You Are—his first major US museum show—explores the artist’s concept of fictional archaeology. Arsham (b. 1980, Cleveland, OH) works across sculpture, architecture, drawing, and photography to investigate ideas of history, symbology, and the material nature of time.

Traditionally, archaeology has been employed as a methodology to sort through and process the past, but Arsham’s multilayered practice asks the question: What if we could dig through the future? Interested in the notion of time travel, the artist creates works that operate as future relics of the present—eroded casts of everyday objects and human figures built from geological materials like sand, pyrite, and volcanic ash. A camera, telephone, and hourglass, all conductors of information, merge with a replica of the 1981 DeLorean built by “Doc” Emmett Brown in the classic 1980s film Back to the Future to operate as remnants of the present seen through the eyes of future researchers. Together, the constellation of works in Wherever You Go, There You Are tells the stories of our time, reminding us of the innate ways we create, craft, and build objects to assert who we are as human beings.

Daniel Arsham: Wherever You Go, There You Are is organized by Heidi Zuckerman, CEO and Director, Orange County Museum of Art

Furthest Thing by Lily Ramirez

Simchowitz is pleased to present gallery artist Lily Ramirez’s first solo show, Furthest Thing, in our DTLA space (727 E Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90021). Using thick, saturated hues of acrylic paint, Ramirez gesturally builds together lines and geometric calculations to illustrate maps and atlases of the city of Los Angeles. Ramirez’s lush, vibrant brush strokes create archaeological sites or pockets of the City on the canvas, a reanimation of personal memory crashing into the broader lived experiences of place—oftentimes painting a map to somewhere unknown. A Los Angeles native, Ramirez’s work is a confession of the city’s story alongside her own—a biography of the cold realism and warm comforts of living in a cityscape bound by its own expectations, a filter of placed and displaced memories, of interior and exterior, and the archive of the lives being lived within its limits. Ramírez’s painting practice has always hinged on her fascination with the paint. She began working in acrylics at a young age, experimenting alongside her father who supported her burgeoning practice. The pair travelled across the US, living briefly in Montana and Wyoming before re-settling in LA. Ramirez attended Otis College of Art and Design to study painting as an undergraduate, where she studied under artists Meg Cranston, Scott Grieger, and Soo Kim.

Top Rank: Fury vs. Wilder

Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs), from Manchester, England, has held the lineal heavyweight crown since dethroning Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015. His comeback from substance abuse and mental health issues inspired millions, and it was the two fights against Wilder that propelled him back to the top of the heavyweight heap. Their December 2018 draw — with Fury rising off the deck in the climactic 12th round — elevated both men to the forefront of the boxing world. Fury knocked out Wilder in the seventh round of their one-sided February 2020 rematch; however, Wilder wanted an immediate third crack at his 6’9, 270-pound adversary. Wilder (42-1, 41 KOs), a 2008 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, won the heavyweight title in January 2015 and re-energized the heavyweight division, captivating fans with his electrifying power and charisma. Wilder held the WBC heavyweight world title for more than five years, notching 10 consecutive successful defenses, more than all-time greats Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier and Lennox Lewis, while earning a reputation as one of the most devastating punchers in boxing history. Nine of his 10 title defenses ended via knockout, including a pair of come-from-behind victories over Cuban star Luis Ortiz and a one-punch, first-round demolition over 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic Breazeale. Wilder’s knockout ratio of more than 93 percent still stands as the highest for any heavyweight champion, past or present.

Valdez cemented his status as one of the faces of Mexican boxing with his 10th-round knockout over longtime champion Berchelt. He is 8-0 in world title fights, including six defenses of the WBO featherweight world title he won in July 2016. Valdez and Conceição fought as amateurs in the gold medal match of the 2009 Pan American Games, with Conceição prevailing by a single point. Valdez turned pro nearly four years before Conceição (16-0, 8 KOs), who made history as the first Brazilian boxer to capture Olympic gold. A native of Bahia, Conceição made his pro debut in November 2016 on the Manny Pacquiao-Jessie Vargas undercard and knocked out four of his first five foes. Last October, he survived an early knockdown to edge Louie Coria by unanimous decision. He last fought April 10 in Tulsa and knocked out Jesus Antonio Ahumada in the seventh round.
